Confidentiality Policy

Introduction

Your privacy and confidentiality are deeply important within therapy. Any information shared through sessions or contact forms is treated with care, respect, confidentiality in line with professional ethical guidelines.

I work in line with the ethical frameworks of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), both of which place confidentiality at the heart of ethical practice.

I also engage in regular clinical supervision. In supervision, client work is discussed in a way that protects your identity and maintains your confidentiality.

What Confidentiality Means

Everything you share in counselling is treated as confidential. This includes:

  • What you talk about in sessions
  • Written notes and records
  • Information shared via email or other agreed forms of communication

Your privacy and dignity are respected at all times.

Limits of Confidentiality and Safeguarding

There are rare situations where confidentiality may need to be broken. These include:

  • If there is a serious risk of harm to you or to another person
  • If there are safeguarding concerns involving a child or vulnerable adult
  • If disclosure is required by law or court order

In these situations, only the relevant information will be shared, and every effort will be made to respect your privacy.

Safeguarding the wellbeing of clients and others is a professional responsibility. If concerns arise, information may need to be shared with appropriate services to reduce risk and ensure safety. Any action taken will be proportionate and guided by ethical and legal frameworks.

Where possible and appropriate, I will aim to discuss any need to share information with you beforehand. This may not be possible where there is an immediate risk of harm or a legal obligation to disclose.

Communication Outside Sessions

Care is taken to protect confidentiality in communication outside of sessions. Email or text is typically used only for practical matters such as scheduling.

Please be aware that electronic communication cannot be guaranteed to be completely secure.

Review of This Policy

This Confidentiality Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains ethical, lawful, and reflective of best practice.
