Equality & Diversity Policy

Introduction

I am committed to providing a counselling service that is inclusive, respectful, and accessible. I believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness, and compassion, regardless of background, identity, or life experience.

Equality and diversity are not an “add-on” to therapeutic work—they are central to creating a safe, respectful, and effective counselling relationship.

Statement of Equality

I actively work to ensure that no client, prospective client, or visitor to this website is treated less favourably on the basis of:

  • Age
  • Disability or long-term health condition
  • Gender identity or gender expression
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
  • Relationship status
  • Pregnancy or maternity
  • Race, ethnicity, nationality, or cultural background
  • Religion, belief, or lack of belief
  • Socio-economic background
  • Neurodiversity

This list is not exhaustive, and I am committed to respecting the full complexity and individuality of each person.

Inclusive Therapeutic Practice

In my counselling work, I aim to:

  • Offer a non-judgemental, affirming, and respectful space
  • Recognise the impact of social, cultural, relational, and systemic factors on wellbeing
  • Remain aware of how power, privilege, discrimination, and marginalisation may affect lived experience
  • Work collaboratively, recognising you as the expert in your own life
  • Reflect on my own values, assumptions, and blind spots through supervision and ongoing learning

I welcome difference and understand that each person’s experience is shaped by their unique identity, history, and context.

Accessibility & Reasonable Adjustments

I am committed to making reasonable adjustments wherever possible to support accessibility. This may include:

  • Flexible appointment formats (in-person or online)
  • Adjustments to communication style or pace
  • Consideration of sensory needs, neurodiversity, or health conditions
  • Clear information about what to expect from therapy

If you have any access needs or concerns, you are very welcome to discuss these with me so we can explore how best to support you.

Language & Respect

I aim to use inclusive and respectful language at all times, and will follow your lead regarding names, pronouns, and how you describe your identity and experiences.

If I get something wrong, I welcome gentle correction and see this as part of respectful, human interaction and ongoing learning.

Professional Responsibility

I take responsibility for maintaining ethical and inclusive practice by:

  • Working within an ethical framework that prioritises equality and respect
  • Engaging in regular clinical supervision
  • Undertaking ongoing professional development, including learning related to diversity, inclusion, and anti-discriminatory practice
  • Reflecting honestly on the therapeutic relationship and my role within it
